How to Access the BSO Video Database
The BSO has a video database which is accessible from any PC inside the School.
This database is accessible via the program: Media on Demand.
You may start this program either by locating it on the Programs menu accessible via the Start button or by clicking on:

This will cause the following screen to open, from which you select the video you wish to view. Headphones can be borrowed from the Librarian to enable you to listen (on any of the Learning Resource Centre computers) to the accompanying audio.

Some earlier emails regarding Media on Demand expands upon some of the finer points in regard to its use:
• From: Ian M. Maguire 15 February 2005 12:05:41
• Subject: Media on Demand
• To: Course Team Forum
• Cc: Senior Management Team
The software, Media on Demand, has now been loaded onto all of the PCs in the faculty office, and onto all of the SMT PCs. The "Video Library" currently contains some sample videos (that were made for use in schools, not for use at the BSO), which have been included purely to illustrate how the system works.
To look at this, go: --> Start --> Programs --> Media on Demand --> MonD Player 2.7 and then select a video to play; double-click on it to play it. (You may need to use headphones, if your computer does not have speakers connected to it, in order to hear the audio.) Click on the Back button if you wish to quit before it finishes.
This represents a major step forward in the way Learning Resources can be made available to our students. Over the coming weeks the program will be loaded onto all remaining PCs in the Learning Resource Centre and throughout the building. (I envisage purchasing a half dozen earphone sets, for students to be able to borrow when they wish to view videos on LRC computers.)
It is envisaged that the BSO library of video resources, and all future BSO video productions, be made available to students through this means. Mark will be shortly adding some sample BSO content.
For this to be organised and developed in an effective manner, so as to enable it to grow into an effective set of Learning Resources for all BSO students, we need advice from the Course Team and Library staff about:
a) the priority order for making existing video resources available in this way?
b) whether the BSO should develop 1 open access library of video resources or several (restricted access) based upon year of course or some other criteria (and, if so, which)?
c) what training Faculty staff may need in order to export clips from here into their powerpoint presentations?
d) whether (some) Faculty may wish to use this to identify (for Mark A.) which parts of video footage they wish to edit out of projects in progress?
e) which Subject classification they wish to apply to the BSO library of video resources?
f) whether they wish to associate grade levels (and if so which) with different videos within the BSO library of video resources?
g) suitable chapter headings/divisions for existing (and new) videos?
h) any extra resource files that you may wish to associate with particular videos (eg Teacher's Guide/Notes)?
i) Search field "keywords" to associate with each video?
j) suitable writeup "blurbs" for each existing video (and for new videos) where these do not already exist?
k) Quizzes for association with particular videos?
l) Proposed XML metadata to associate with each video?
m) addition of appropriate internet (URL) links (where appropriate) to the Extra Resources fields for each video?
We will shortly be announcing this new capability to students. It would be good if we had answers to at least some of the above questions by that point.
Could Stephen
Tyreman please put this issue onto the agenda for the next Course Team
meeting? If you let me know when you wish to discuss this, I may be
available to attend for this agenda item, if you wish.
